Cumbria Performance Netball

In Cumbria, we are committed to providing an exceptional pathway for our young athletes who wish to take their netball up a gear and perform on a regional stage. Our pathway programmes also have good links with our local Superleague franchise, Manchester Thunder, which can push each athlete further and in to elite-level netball. 

Registrations RE-OPENED

Registrations for the 2024/2025 county academy trials are RE-OPENED – please note the new deadline below.

They are to be held at The Hirst Centre, Sedbergh on Sunday 28 September 2025. 

These trials are open to girls in the U17, U15 & U13 age groups.

The trial fee of £10.00 should be paid in cash on the day.

How does the county pathway work?

  • Open Trials

    Athletes in the U17 (Y11/12) U15 (Y9/10) and U13 (Y7/8) age groups are invited to attend open trials on the published date. Athletes should pre-register for these trials via the online form by the given deadline. If you become unavailable for any reason, please contact the team as soon as possible.

  • Athlete Selection

    Our selection team reviews all prospective athletes during the trial, from the very moment you walk through the door. Any athlete selected for the county academy shall be contacted in the days following the trials.

  • Training Sessions

    County academy training sessions are scheduled once per month, excluding match days and other pathway sessions. These are usually on Sunday mornings.

  • Franchise Pathway

    Our north-west franchise team, Manchester Thunder, also operate their own pathway which runs adjacent to county academies. U15s should also attend positional development sessions organised by the Thunder pathway team.

  • Cost of the Pathway

    In 2025-2026, the approximate performance programme cost is £150 per athlete, which does not include any costs of transport or kit. There is a trial fee of £10.00 payable on the day.

What do selectors look for?

During the county trials, our selectors look for a variety of qualities in athletes. Players must have be able to demonstrate good game sense, tactical awareness, communication, teamwork, problem solving and decision making. They should also have excellent movement and ball skills, inside-out knowledge of the rules, and a willingness to give it all they’ve got.
